Wasps Netball stars shine at Quad Series

Updated: Jan 22, 2019

Wasps Netball stars continued their excellent start to the season by impressing for their national sides at the Quad Series.

Rachel Dunn, Jade Clarke and Fran Williams all headed into the Quad Series tournament with England full of confidence after Wasps’ victory against Loughborough Lightning.

Goal shooter Rachel Dunn, who first stepped out for the Vitality Roses 15 years ago, was introduced in the second-quarter against top-ranked Australia, helping England to a three-goal victory in a repeat of last year’s Commonwealth Games final success and receiving the Player of the Match award.

Fran Williams was called upon in the final quarter to inject a gritty defensive performance at the Copper Box Arena, helping the Vitality Roses to secure a historic victory on home soil against world number one side Australia.

Wasps Netball teammates Jade Clarke and Bongi Msomi found themselves head-to-head in opposing colours when England took on South Africa, with both players demonstrating their pivotal roles in their national sides.

Australia won the tournament, despite the defeat to England, with the Vitality Roses in second place, South Africa in third and New Zealand in fourth.

Mel Mansfield said: “It’s always a great feeling to pull on your national team’s colours and all of our players can be extremely proud of their performances at the weekend.

“Rachel Dunn’s performance against Australia really stood out. She is in fantastic form and came on to help in emphatic fashion at a crucial point in the game. It was great to see her back in the Vitality Roses squad.

“Bongi showed her class in all of South Africa’s fixtures. She’s a natural leader and we’re delighted to have her with us for the season.

“Jade was in excellent form throughout the series demonstrating her crucial role in the England line up and Fran’s immediate impact on the game showcased her tactical intelligence.

“After the excitement of the Quad Series, we are looking forward to having the whole squad together to train ahead of two back-to-back away fixtures.”

Wasps are back in action in the Vitality Netball Superleague on Saturday 26 January against London Pulse at the Copper Box Arena, before heading to Surrey Storm on Saturday 2 February.

Mel Mansfield’s side will return to Ricoh Arena for their first home game of 2019 on Monday 11 February to take on Saracens Mavericks.

Season Memberships are now on sale, and individual tickets for the first six home Vitality Netball Superleague fixtures of the 2019 season are also available.
